Book Scores Big At Auction Fundraiser

The Tug McGraw Foundation recently held a fundraising event celebrating the life of the late relief pitcher Tug McGraw, who died on January 5, 2004 after a ten-month battle with brain cancer. The event called “Celebrating, Remembering, Believing!” was held on August 30 to commemorate what would have been McGraw’s 60th birthday. Former Phillies teammates were on hand as celebrity bartenders for shared moments of reflection and appreciation with several hundred friends and fans.

Laughter and loving memories encompassed the event, turning the gathering into more of a party than a fundraiser. Still, those in attendance were glad to support the Tug McGraw Foundation and its mission to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with brain cancer. Money was raised through ticket sales for the event and a silent auction including paraphernalia from both the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies, as well as signed items from country superstar Tim McGraw.

One of the items available for bidding was an autographed copy of the book Music Row Dogs and Nashville Cats. Full of photographs of various country artists and their pets, the book was autographed by Jeff McMahon. McMahon is keyboardist for Tim McGraw’s band the Dancehall Doctors and one of the artists featured in the book.

“I spoke with Jennifer Brusstar, CEO of the Foundation, at a concert the day before the event,” said McMahon. “I was performing with Tim in another city and could not attend the event. She told me what they were planning and asked if I’d like to contribute something for their auction, which I was more than happy to do. The Foundation was really important to Tug, and we all want to support it…and support him.”

The Foundation event was a huge success, and the book autographed by McMahon ultimately raised $250 for the charity. Appropriate enough, the bidding for the book was won by Jodi Powers, herself a two-year survivor of brain cancer.

Proceeds from the event will go to support The Tug McGraw Center for Neuro-Oncology Quality of Life Research at Duke.
