Home on the Range Cleans Up
Take a drive through Hollywood, and you will find constant reminders
of upcoming movies, current stars, and the newest screen spectacle. The
release of Disney’s newest animated feature, Home On The Range,
has been no different, as billboards and posters have peppered the busy
Los Angeles streets for weeks. The hilarious comedy opened nationwide
on April 2, 2004.
McMahon was in Los Angeles for the film’s opening weekend. As keyboardist
for the Dancehall Doctors, band for country superstar Tim McGraw, he was
well aware of the musical contribution his boss had made to the soundtrack
for the film. McGraw had recorded the song, “Wherever The Trail
May Lead,” months earlier. McMahon was anxious to see the film and
hear the song in a real theatre.
But before he could even make it to the film, he found another way to
support his buddy McGraw. “I went for a run and saw a number of
posters advertising the film,” said McMahon, “and they were
filthy!” Uncomfortable with the idea of seeing McGraw’s name
tainted by the dirt and scum he found adorning the posters, McMahon took
matters into his own hands.
Visiting one corner after another, McMahon scraped and scrubbed, leaving
the names “Disney” and “McGraw” free of the dust
and dirt that had sullied them only moments earlier. Home On The Range
could now call out untarnished, announcing in full voice the charm and
heart of the music left to behold.
As for this new responsibility that fell upon him, McMahon was unwavering.
“What else could I do…just turn and walk away? Not an option,”
he said. “I couldn’t stand to see McGraw’s name tainted
that way.”
“Besides,” added McMahon, “he’d do the same for
me.”
