In My Words.
Ill run into someone from back home in Texas. Someone from my hometown. Maybe from college. A fraternity brother or a fan from some early bar band. At some point, theyll begin to reminisce and ultimately announce: Youre so lucky. Its so great that you are doing exactly what we always knew you would do ... livin the dream!
I do love what I do, and Ive had some wonderful opportunities. Ive performed great music all across the world with people that I consider my friends. Ive played on award-winning albums and shared the stage with some of my musical heroes. Ive made contributions to best-selling books and history-making concert tours.
Apart from those successes, and more importantly, Ive had occasions to see these successes benefit others. Whether addressing the devastation of Katrina, poverty in Africa, or the medical hardships presented by cancer, Ive appreciated the chance to serve interests larger than I might have ever imagined.
But livin the dream? I dont know.
Growing up as a child, learning piano as a student, musicals in high school, bands in and after college, they all taught me one thing I just had to play. I didnt have to become a star, or fill arenas, or make records, or even make a living. In fact, the idea of pursuing music as a career never really came up until after I graduated college ... without a music degree.
I was just a kid that loved to read, ate in all-night coffee shops with my buddies, and played the piano.
Just like now. Huh ... I guess I am pretty lucky at that.
Peace,
